NEW YORK—Mayzsoul Inc., based in metropolitan Washington, DC, presents its one-hour work, The Pull, at the epicenter of downtown dance in New York, DNA (Dance New Amsterdam), on Saturday, August 2nd, 8pm. In a pulsating visual feast, 14 dancers interpret the choreography of five artists, including Mayzsoul Inc. director Melanie Lalande and Roger Neece, an anchor member of DC Contact Improv Jams. A spoken word narrative grounds the raw maelstrom of movement, performed by Jair Kamperveen, a member of the lauded Shakespeare Theatre Company of Washington, DC.
Collaborative creativity is the driving ethos of Mayzsoul Inc., a community of artists/dancers that puts into motion Mahatma Gandhi’s missive: “Be the change you seek to make in the world.” Inspiring The Pull are reactions to change – resistance, embrace, and the stamina to hold true to one’s essence whether awaiting change or speeding through it. Director and choreographer Melanie Lalande’s diverse background includes choreographing the hip-hop tour of The Roots and her current work as assistant artistic director of Cirque du Soleil’s Kooza.
The Pull follows Mayzsoul Inc.’s New York debut in 2007 at the Gershwin Hotel performance series, “Live from the Living Room,” curated by Michael Wiener. The Theater at Dance New Amsterdam is a fitting venue for Mayzsoul Inc., which can trace a creative lineage to Dance New Amsterdam through Lalande, who received her certification to teach Lynn Simonson technique here. The Theater at Dance New Amsterdam is a 130-seat performance space with state of the art light and sound systems.
